Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features some news from the workers’ comp drug fight, as EMPLOYERS insurance recently announced that it had completed the pilot test of a new program to prevent the abuse of prescription opioid drugs. According to EMPLOYERS, the program has dramatically reduced the amount of medically unnecessary opioids prescribed and the time it takes to wean injured workers from them, once prescribed, resulting in millions of dollars of cost savings over the past 18 months.
Major components of the program include training physicians to recognize the signs of opioid abuse and encouraging alternatives, promoting network physicians who successfully return injured workers to their jobs without over-prescribing of opioids, and stepping-up drug testing procedures.
