Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of Healthcare Solutions’ Third Annual Workers’ Compensation Drug Trends Report, which examines year-over-year changes in prescription drug costs and utilization. Notably, the report segments data based on claim age to look at differences in drug utilization between developing claims (under 3 years old) and mature claims (3+ years).
According to the report, mature claims utilize more drugs, more frequently, and for a longer period of time, which means different approaches to claims management are needed for that category. As an example, the report notes that mature claims utilize an average of 22 prescriptions per year, compared to five fills per year in developing ones.
