Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of some new research from CWCI that found that Schedule II opioids accounted for about 7% of all outpatient drugs dispensed to California injured workers over the past two years, consuming nearly 20% of California workers’ comp outpatient prescription dollars.
In their 2012 analysis, CWCI had seen a potential drop off in opioids in the second half of 2011, however the new data disproved that. CWCI noted that the dip was instead likely due to factors like billing cycles for year-end services, data submission delays due to processing UR decisions, and liens, as opioids continue to remain around the 7% level, after experiencing rapid growth from 2005-08 and more moderate increases from 2008-2010.
