Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of an interesting report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau that examines Durable Medical Equipment (DME) fraud.
While the report does not apply solely to workers’ comp (though it’s included), its worth a look due to the finding that if prior estimates are applied, overall DME fraud could eventually fall between $1.5 billion and $5 billion in a single year. Additionally, the report breaks down common fraud issues and techniques, noting the insidiousness of occurrences such as when patients who have received proper prescriptions for DME never receive it.
