Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features a new study from CWCI on changes in California workers’ comp medical payments. The study found that since the first year after the last round of reforms in the state (2005), average amounts insurers paid for medical services on claims increased sharply, including average payments for treatment, pharmaceuticals and DME, med-legal reports, and medical management, with those four sub-categories posting first-year payments increases ranging from 64% for treatment to 152% for pharmaceuticals and DME.
The study also found that average amounts paid per claim for indemnity benefits for lost time and permanent disabilities have followed a similar pattern, declining briefly in the first year after the reforms, but then climbing steadily.
