Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap wraps up a great time at the CA Workers’ Comp & Risk Conference! Up top today is the release of a new report from Lockton on the abuse of opioid prescriptions, which notes that there has never been a more damaging impact on the cost of workers’ comp claims from a single issue, with an estimated 55 to 86 percent of all claimants receiving opioids for chronic pain relief.
The new report, Opioids Wreak Havoc on Workers’ Compensation Costs also points out that pharmacy is growing disproportionately to total medical costs only accounting for about 2% of all medical costs in 1990, while today, on average, workers’ compensation prescription drugs account for 19 percent of the total medical spend. To help curb the problem, the report includes a series of best practices for risk and claims managers.
