Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features a couple of pieces of interesting NCOIL testimony from industry groups. First up is PCI, who expressed their position that physician dispensing of repackaged drugs should be more tightly regulated in order to ensure workers’ comp cost saving measures like fee schedules and treatment guidelines are not evaded. PCI also asserted their belief that physician dispensing of repackaged drugs injects cost into the system without any discernible benefits to injured workers and presents numerous medication safety issues. Also testifying before NCOIL recently was AIA, who focused on potential legislative solutions to address the growing problem of opioid abuse in workers’ comp cases. AIA pointed out that there is little credible evidence that long-term opioid use is the appropriate treatment for many injuries, noted physician dispensing and drug repackaging as issues, and noted that dosing guidelines, a strong prescription monitoring system, and pain management consultations for patients are all sensible and reasonable solutions that could be implemented to help fight the epidemic.
