Today’s edition of WorkCompRecap features some interesting news from Ohio’s BWC on early results from their first ever formulary and a number of other pharmacy management initiatives that are helping in efforts to increase positive outcomes for injured workers.
Early data from the report shows that from February to April 2012, the newly enacted formulary has driven down the number of narcotics prescribed to injured workers by 1.1 million doses or 12 percent versus the same period in 2011. The reduction in doses also equates to a 15-percent, or $2.1 million, reduction in costs. Also of note, the same review found skeletal muscle relaxant (SMR) prescriptions dropped by 59 percent, resulting in a 58 percent ($532,000) decrease in cost.
