Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the recently hot topic of physician dispensing, with PCI’s announcement of their support for the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission’s forward progress on a rule change addressing significant markups on physician dispensed, repackaged prescription drugs.
According to PCI, when advancing the draft rule, the Commission cited a study from Coventry which demonstrated that the average repackaged drug price was 236 percent higher than the average non-repacked drug price. The suggested rule change in would mandate that prescriptions filled and dispensed outside of a licensed pharmacy be billed at the average wholesale price for the underlying drug product, plus a dispensing fee of $4.18.
