Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features some news from the upcoming National Workers’ Compensation and Disability Conference, who recently highlighted their session on Opioid Addiction with Dr. Gary Franklin, Medical Director at the Washington Department of Labor and Industries. According to Dr. Franklin, the opioid crisis is a problem created by man which will require man-made solutions.
Dr. Franklin cites organized medicine, drug company lobbying, lack of limitations on dosage, and constant marketing of opioids as man made problems facilitating the epidemic. The session will also explore solutions for battling opioid abuse in workers’ comp, including the repeal of states’ narcotics laws and adoption of new ones that reflect best practices that will ensure opioids are used safely and effectively.
