Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of a new edition of WCRI’s CompScope Medical Benchmarks series. In this latest release, California goes under the microscope, with key findings including rapid growth in costs per claim of medical treatments for injured workers in California, after large decreases that resulted from previous years’ system reforms.
WCRI attributed the growth in medical payments per claim to both increases in the utilization of medical care and prices for some services. Some of the additional medical cost drivers cited included more frequent billing for complex office visits with higher prices, increases in the percentage of claims that received major radiology services, and a rise in prices paid for office visits due to a large fee schedule increase.
