Today’s edition of WorkCompRecap features mixed signals coming out of the department of labor and the workforce, as Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis issued her monthly statement on May’s Employment Situation report. Nonfarm payroll employment added 54,000 jobs, compared to the addition of 244,000 in April, which was regarded by mainstream media and the markets as less than encouraging. Also in the news is SFN Group’s Employee Confidence Index, which measures workers’ confidence in their employment situation and optimism in the economic environment. The Index actually crept up 0.5 points in the month of May to 53.9. While a greater number of respondents believed that the macroeconomic situation was improving, 51 percent still believed that there were still fewer jobs available, representing no change from April.
