Today’s edition of WorkCompRecap features some action-packed crime and enforcement news, as Southern California Medical-Legal Consultants, Inc. (SCMLC) announced that electronic files containing names and social security numbers of approximately 300,000 individuals who have applied for California workers’ compensation benefits had been exposed to unauthorized access. The company was notified of the possible breach by a data security firm that discovered some of the files using a sophisticated, automated search of Google indexes.

Also in the news is Colorado Attorney General John Suthers, who recently announced that his office has obtained an indictment against two Aurora residents suspected of stealing $140,000 worth of workers’ compensation funds from Pinnacol Assurance. Each defendant could face a fine of up to $750,000 and up to 12 years in prison if convicted of theft, a class-three felony.
