SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 16, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — Chevron Energy Solutions, a unit of Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX), announced today that its operation of the Central Utility Plant at Fort Detrick has earned Star Status from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). The Star VPP is OSHA’s prestigious safety and health certification that recognizes employers and workers in private industry and federal agencies who have implemented exemplary occupational safety and health management systems and maintain injury and illness rates below national Bureau of Labor Statistics averages for their respective industries.
“We are pleased to recognize Chevron Energy Solutions for excellence in Safety and Occupational Health,” said Brett Beall, Compliance Assistance Specialist for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. “There are about 1,700 Voluntary Protection Program sites across the country, which highlights the uniqueness of this award.”
“Safety is a top priority for Chevron Energy Solutions and is an important part of our company’s culture,” said Jim Davis, president of Chevron Energy Solutions. “We appreciate this recognition from OSHA and our continued collaboration at Fort Detrick.”
Chevron Energy Solutions designed, constructed, operates and maintains the Central Utility Plant for Keenan Fort Detrick Energy LLC to support the U.S. Army Garrison and National Interagency Biodefense campus (NIBC) at Fort Detrick, located in Frederick, Md. The Central Utility Plant is an energy efficient plant fueled by natural gas or fuel oil and has been delivering reliable steam, chilled water and high-quality/conditioned stand-by emergency power since 2008 to support multiple agencies including the National Institute of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Integrated Research Facility, Department of Homeland Security’s National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center, U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases and Fort Detrick’s Steam Sterilization Plant.
“As the first U.S. Army Garrison to receive Star Status from OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program, we congratulate Chevron Energy Solutions for also attaining this recognition for their operation of the Central Utility Plant at Fort Detrick,” said Major General James Gilman, Commanding General Fort Detrick. “We appreciate the company’s support for the Garrison’s commitment to safety and health.”
In order to be considered for OSHA’s VPP, Chevron Energy Solutions submitted an application to OSHA and participated in an onsite evaluation by a team of safety and health professionals. The company’s operation of the Central Utility Plant at Fort Detrick will be re-evaluated every three to five years to remain in the program. Chevron’s Briarpark facility in Houston was recently re-evaluated and has maintained Star status through four re-approval cycles.
A ceremony is being held today and a representation from OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program will present a plaque and flag to Chevron representatives. Invited guests include government, military and business officials.
