WorkCompRecap: Reforms & Rates!

Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the announcement that Maine Governor Paul LePage has signed into law LD 1646, “An Act To Prevent Opiate Abuse by Strengthening the Controlled Substances Prescription Monitoring Program.”

The new legislation, which was introduced by the Governor, mandates prescriber participation in the state’s Prescription Monitoring Program, sets limits for the strength of opioid prescriptions, with new patients being capped at 100 MED, and limits script durations for acute pain at seven days and for chronic pain at 30 days beginning in January 2017. The new law also requires that prescribers submit opioid prescriptions electronically beginning next year and that they undergo addiction training every two years.
