WorkCompRecap: In The Mix!

Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of a new CWCI analysis that found average amounts paid to California workers’ comp treating physicians for medical reports fell more than 30% in Q1 of 2014 as the state transitioned to a Resource-Based Relative Value Scale (RBRVS) fee schedule.

When looking at the mix of reports associated different E/M services however, CWCI found that under the new schedule, fairly inexpensive reports on follow-up visits increased from 78% to 86% of all physician reports, while consultation and prolonged service reports, which historically received the highest reimbursements, saw significant drops (from 6% and 4% to less than 1%). CWCI therefore noted that changes in report mix may have been the key factor in average amounts paid as opposed to reductions in fees assigned to the report codes.
