WorkCompRecap: Guideline Gains!

Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the Michigan WCA’s recent announcement that it has made amendments to its rules and fee schedule in order to address the problem of long-term use of opioids by injured workers and help reduce medical costs, which recently went into effect.

The new rules will prevent reimbursements for opioid treatment beyond 90 days for non-cancer related chronic pain unless detailed physician reporting requirements and other conditions are met, and limitations on the reimbursement for custom compounded topical drugs are also included. The WCA noted the impact of its continued fee schedule efforts by pointing out that a recent WCRI study found the state’s medical payments per claim to be among the lowest, likely due to its fee schedules, and that Michigan’s cumulative pure premium decrease from 2011-14 was the second best in the nation.
