WorkCompRecap: Ongoing Opioids!

Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of the second edition of WCRI’s Longer-Term Use of Opioids study, which examined about 264,000 workers’ compensation claims and 1.5 million associated prescriptions from 25 states, and found that in most states, the percentage of claims with opioids that received opioids on a longer-term basis showed little change (within 2 percentage points) between 2008/2010 and 2010/2012.

Louisiana was found to have the most prevalent longer-term use, where 1 in 6 injured workers with opioids were identified as having longer-term use in 2010/2012. WCRI also noted a significant increase in the use of drug testing over the study period, but in some states found the percentage of longer-term opioid users who received those services was still low.
