WorkCompRecap: Watch the Drugs!

Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features WCRI’s announcement of their upcoming webinar on Narcotics. WCRI will present a one-hour discussion on Thursday, June7, 2012 at 1pm ET, with Senior Researcher Dongchun Wang covering higher use of narcotics among injured workers in key states, as well as lower compliance with treatment guidelines by doctors that prescribe narcotics to long term users. Also on the drug front today is the TDI-DWC, who after receiving feedback from workers’ comp system participants have released a revised version of their proposed Health Care Providers Pain Management (Opioid) Plan-Based Audit, which seeks to audit opioid utilization in the Texas workers’ comp system. The audit will focus on opioid prescribing patterns of providers that are inconsistent with treatment recommendations outlined in TDI-DWC’s adopted treatment guidelines (WLDI’s ODG), and a Medical Quality Review Panel will assess the necessity and appropriateness of prescribing opioids in cases selected.
