WorkCompRecap: Bumps & Battles!

Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features a new report from Conning Research & Consulting on what the Workers’ Compensation industry will face as our economy emerges from recession. The new report, Workers’ Compensation: A Bumpy Road from Recession to Recovery, analyzes performance drivers, state differences, industry differences, insurer behavior and looks at how insurers can prepare for change. According to Conning, they expect economic recovery and rate increases to boost premium, but rising medical costs and increased utilization of drugs are expected to re-introduce inflation in loss costs and reduce profitability even further.

Also in the news today is the passage of House Bill 1 by Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear. The bill includes a broad spectrum of measures designed to help Kentucky battle its growing prescription drug abuse problems. Key measures included the expansion of KASPER (the state’s prescription monitoring system), license requirements for owning a pain management clinic, and requiring licensure boards to investigate prescribing complaints immediately.
